About Spanish (Español)

Spanish (Español) is the second most spoken language in the world by native speakers, with over 485 million first-language speakers and 590 million total speakers. It is the official language of 21 countries across Latin America, Europe, and Africa. Spanish is a phonetic language — words are almost always spelled as they sound, which makes it one of the more accessible languages for typed practice once you learn the keyboard.

Special Characters

Spanish uses relatively few special characters beyond the Latin alphabet: á, é, í, ó, ú (vowels with acute accents indicating stress), ü (used in güe and güi syllables), ñ (the most iconic Spanish character, pronounced 'ny'), ¿ (inverted question mark, placed at the start of questions), and ¡ (inverted exclamation mark at the start of exclamations).

How to Type Spanish Characters

On a US keyboard (Windows): á = Alt+0225, é = Alt+0233, í = Alt+0237, ó = Alt+0243, ú = Alt+0250, ñ = Alt+0241, ¿ = Alt+0191, ¡ = Alt+0161. On Mac: Option+E then vowel = acute accent (á, é, í, ó, ú); Option+N then N = ñ; Option+? = ¿; Option+1 = ¡. The 'US International' keyboard layout is widely used for Spanish on US hardware.

Typing Tips for Spanish

The ñ is unique to Spanish and essential — words like año (year), mañana (tomorrow), and español itself require it. Accented vowels mark stress and distinguish word pairs (si = if, sí = yes; mas = but, más = more). Common word endings '-ción', '-mente', and '-ado' are extremely frequent — drilling them builds speed fast.
