About Thai (ภาษาไทย)

Thai (ภาษาไทย) is the official language of Thailand, spoken by approximately 60 million people. It is a tonal language with five tones that change the meaning of words. The Thai script has 44 consonants, 15 vowel symbols, 4 tone marks, and several other diacritics. Unlike most scripts, Thai is written without spaces between words — spaces mark the end of a clause or sentence.

Special Characters

Thai uses its own unique script derived from the Old Khmer script. Consonants are divided into three classes (high, mid, low) which interact with tone marks to produce the five tones. Vowels can appear before, after, above, or below the consonant they follow. Special characters include: ่ ้ ๊ ๋ (tone marks), ั า ิ ี ุ ู เ แ (common vowels), and ๆ (repetition mark).

How to Type Thai Characters

Thai typing uses the Kedmanee or Pattachote keyboard layouts. Kedmanee is the most common in Thailand. On Windows, add Thai from Settings → Time & Language → Language. On Mac, add Thai from System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources. Vowel marks, tone marks, and consonants are typed as separate keystrokes that combine visually on screen.

Typing Tips for Thai

Common short Thai words dominate typing: และ (and), ใน (in), ที่ (that/at), ของ (of), ไม่ (not), มี (have), ได้ (can/get), จะ (will). Practice the Kedmanee layout until your fingers know where the vowel symbols sit above the consonant row. Tone marks stack on top of consonants — your IME handles this automatically, so just type the keystroke sequence.
