About Arabic (العربية)

Arabic (العربية) is spoken by approximately 400 million people across 22 countries, making it the fifth most spoken language in the world. It is the liturgical language of Islam and one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is used in media, education, and formal writing, while dozens of regional dialects are used in everyday speech.

Special Characters

Arabic uses a 28-letter abjad script written right-to-left. Each letter has up to four forms depending on its position in a word. Special characters include: ء (hamza), ى (alef maqsura), ة (ta marbuta), and the diacritical marks (harakat) for short vowels: َ (fatha), ِ (kasra), ُ (damma). On a standard Arabic keyboard, letters are mapped across the QWERTY layout.

How to Type Arabic Characters

Arabic typing requires switching your keyboard to an Arabic input method. On Windows, add Arabic from Settings → Time & Language → Language. On Mac, go to System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources. The Arabic keyboard layout places letters on the standard keys. Because Arabic is written right-to-left, your text editor will automatically align text to the right.

Typing Tips for Arabic

The most common Arabic words are short connectors: في (in), من (from), على (on), إلى (to), أن (that), مع (with). The definite article ال (al-) attaches directly to the following noun — practice typing it as a unit. Doubled letters (shadda ّ) are written as one character with a diacritic. Focus on the most frequent root patterns to build speed quickly.
