About Hindi (हिन्दी)

Hindi (हिन्दी) is spoken by approximately 600 million people as a first or second language, making it one of the most spoken languages in the world. It is the official language of India alongside English and serves as a lingua franca across northern and central India. Hindi uses the Devanagari script, an abugida writing system where consonants carry an inherent vowel modified by diacritic marks.

Special Characters

Devanagari contains 13 vowels (स्वर) and 36 consonants (व्यंजन). Vowels appear as independent characters (अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ, ए, ऐ, ओ, औ) or as diacritic marks attached to consonants. Common consonants: क (ka), ख (kha), ग (ga), त (ta), न (na), म (ma). The anusvara (ं) adds a nasal sound, and the halant (्) suppresses a consonant's inherent vowel.

How to Type Hindi Characters

The fastest way to start is Phonetic/Transliteration input — type Hindi words in Roman letters and the IME converts them (e.g., 'namaste' → नमस्ते, 'bharat' → भारत). On Windows: Settings → Language → Add Hindi → use Microsoft Hindi Phonetic or Indic Input. On Mac: add 'Hindi - Transliteration' in Input Sources. Alternatively, the Inscript layout maps Devanagari characters directly to keyboard keys for advanced typists.

Typing Tips for Hindi

Transliteration input is the fastest onramp — focus on learning how the IME maps sounds to characters. Common high-frequency words: और (and), है (is), में (in), को (to), का (of), यह (this), वह (that) appear in almost every sentence. The halant (्) combines consonants into conjunct forms — mastering these is key to correct Devanagari output.
