1000 Character Typing Test

The 1,000-character challenge is a milestone for serious typists. Roughly equivalent to a full page of double-spaced text, completing this at high accuracy with no significant speed drop demonstrates a mature typing foundation. Compare your score here to your 300-character result — the gap reveals your endurance deficit.

How to Stage a Proper Milestone Attempt

A 1,000-character personal best deserves the same staging a powerlifter gives a max attempt — you don't just wander up to it. Two hundred words is a five-minute commitment at 40 WPM and 2.5 minutes at 80, long enough that conditions matter. Schedule the attempt for when you're typically sharpest (mid-morning for most people), warm up with two short runs at easy pace, take one — and only one — full-effort attempt, and write down the result whatever it is. Grinding out a second attempt on tired hands teaches your fingers a sloppier version of the test.

Define success before you start, on two axes: finishing within 10% of your short-test speed, and holding accuracy at 96% or better. Hit both and the milestone is genuinely yours; hit only the speed mark and you've recorded an asterisk. It's also worth logging the attempt in characters per minute — at this length the CPM figure captures session-to-session progress that rounds away in WPM.

One more habit worth keeping: take a 300-character sprint the same day and note both numbers together. The pair — burst versus distance — is a fuller picture of your ability than either alone, the way a runner tracks both their mile and their 10K.
