Why the Scoring Method Changes Everything

Typing speed is only useful if it measures productive output. Gross WPM counts how many characters your fingers pressed, divided by time. Net WPM subtracts a penalty for uncorrected errors from that number. The difference matters because producing incorrect text is worse than producing no text at all in most real-world work contexts.

Why Your Score Is Higher on Some Sites

If you've taken typing tests on multiple platforms and noticed your score varies by 10 or more points between them, scoring methodology is usually the reason. Sites that show higher scores are often using one or more of these approaches:

• Gross WPM instead of net WPM
• Shorter test windows (15 seconds instead of 1 minute) that don't allow fatigue to appear
• Common word lists that you're likely to have memorized, reducing the cognitive load
• No penalty for skipped words or uncorrected errors

None of these make the site "wrong" in an absolute sense, but they do make the scores less useful for setting realistic expectations.

What Employers and Professional Tests Use

Every major employer typing assessment platform uses net WPM. The platforms used in hiring — TypingDNA, Criteria Corp, eSkill, Kenexa Prove It — all subtract error penalties from the final score. If you've been practicing on a gross WPM site and expecting to hit a 60 WPM target, you may be 5–15 points below that target on the actual assessment.

How Accuracy Feeds Into Score Honesty

The other major honesty gap between sites is how they handle accuracy. Some sites show you only the WPM number and no accuracy percentage. A score of 75 WPM at 99% accuracy is very different from 75 WPM at 91% accuracy. The first is a strong, professional score. The second will likely fall below 65 WPM net once errors are penalised.
