A 400-character test sits between a quick sprint and a sustained effort — roughly 80 words at average typing speed. It's an ideal length for practice sessions where you want to push speed without the mental overhead of a long timed test.

How to Get the Most from This Test

This is the sweet spot for focused drilling. Long enough to build rhythm, short enough to repeat frequently. Make 400-character tests a daily habit if you're actively trying to improve.
Maintain speed in the second half. Most typists start strong and trail off. Try to actively accelerate through the final 50 words rather than coasting to the finish.
Check your accuracy first. Net WPM at this length is sensitive to errors. One burst of 5 mistakes costs roughly 3 WPM net. Prioritise clean strokes over maximum speed.
Use it to test specific improvements. If you've been practising the number row or punctuation, add the relevant modifier and test at 400 characters to see if the drill is working.
