How Reading Time Is Calculated
Reading time is calculated at 200 words per minute — the commonly cited average adult reading speed for comprehension (not skimming or speed reading). The result rounds up to the nearest minute.

This is the speed used by this calculator. Suitable for non-fiction, articles, and academic content where full comprehension is expected.
Fast Reader (300 WPM)
Above average readers who have developed efficient eye movement habits. Fiction and familiar topics are typically read faster.
Speed Reading (400–700 WPM)
Techniques like chunking and minimising subvocalisation. Comprehension typically drops at these speeds unless practised regularly.
When Is Reading Time Useful?
- Blog posts: Medium and similar platforms display estimated reading time. Posts under 7 minutes tend to see better completion rates.
- Presentations: A 10-minute talk requires roughly 1,300–1,500 words of script at a natural speaking pace.
- Newsletters: Most subscribers won't read past 5 minutes. Reading time helps you trim content to the right length.
- School assignments: Teachers sometimes specify time rather than word count for oral presentations or reading exercises.
