Characters With Spaces vs. Without Spaces
Characters (With Spaces)
The total length of your text string, including every space, tab, and line break. This is the number most platforms use when enforcing character limits.
Characters (Without Spaces)
The character count after all whitespace is removed — letters, numbers, and punctuation only. Useful when assessing the density of a piece of writing.
Common Character Limits to Know
- Twitter/X: 280 characters per post
- SMS: 160 characters per message (messages over 160 are split into multiple SMS)
- Meta description: 150–160 characters recommended for SEO
- Instagram bio: 150 characters
- LinkedIn headline: 220 characters
- Google Ads headline: 30 characters per headline
- YouTube title: 100 characters (60 recommended to avoid truncation)
