Top Row Practice
Build speed on Q W E R T Y U I O P.
The Top Row
The top row contains Q W E R T Y U I O P. These keys are typed by reaching upward from the home row — your finger extends, presses the key, and immediately returns. The most important rule: your other fingers should stay on the home row while one finger is reaching.
Finger Assignment
- Left index (F): reaches to R and T
- Left middle (D): reaches to E
- Left ring (S): reaches to W
- Left pinky (A): reaches to Q
- Right index (J): reaches to U and Y
- Right middle (K): reaches to I
- Right ring (L): reaches to O
- Right pinky (;): reaches to P
Practice Words
Focus on common words that mix home row and top row keys: type, write, quite, were, your, there, where, power, tower, quote, quiet, ripe, wire, tire, true, pure, outer, upper, outer, port, worth.
Speed Tips
Many typists have a slower top row because the reach feels uncertain. The fix is deliberate slow practice — reach, press, return — until the motion feels automatic. Speed comes naturally once the movement is locked in.
