Symbol and Punctuation Practice

Master punctuation and special characters.

Why Symbols Slow Typists Down

Even typists with 80+ WPM on basic words often slow to 40 WPM when punctuation appears. Symbols break the rhythm because they require reaching to unfamiliar positions. The fix is deliberate, repeated practice until each symbol has its own automatic movement.

Most Important Symbols for Everyday Typing

  • Period (.) — right ring finger reach down
  • Comma (,) — right middle finger reach down
  • Apostrophe (') — right pinky, same row as P
  • Quotation marks (") — shift + apostrophe
  • Hyphen (-) — right pinky, top row right of 0
  • Colon (:) — shift + semicolon
  • Question mark (?) — shift + slash
  • Exclamation (!) — shift + 1

For Developers

If you write code, you'll also need: { } [ ] ( ) = + _ - | \ / @ # $ % ^ & * ~ ` < >. These all have standard positions on a US keyboard. Make a habit of typing them without looking — your coding speed will improve dramatically.

Practice Tips

Use the punctuation mode in the typing test to mix symbols into your everyday word practice. Start with period and comma (the most common), then add apostrophe, then work through the rest.
