How to use TypingTest.now

Everything you need to know to get started, run your first test, and interpret your results.

Taking a Test

Visit the homepage, click anywhere in the word area (or just start typing), and the test begins automatically. The typing area focuses when you click or press any key.

When the test ends, you'll see your results: net WPM, accuracy, raw WPM, and a character breakdown. Press Tab + Enter or click next to start a new test.

Modes

  • Words — type a set number of words as fast as possible. Choose 10, 25, 50, or 100 words, or enter a custom count.
  • Time — type for a fixed duration (15s, 30s, 60s, 120s, or custom). The test ends when the timer runs out.
  • Quote — type a complete quotation. The test ends when the full quote is typed correctly.
  • Zen — type endlessly with no timer or word limit. Great for warm-up or meditative practice.
  • Custom — paste your own text to type.

Modifiers

Punctuation — adds commas, periods, and other punctuation to the word list, making it harder and more realistic.
Numbers — randomly inserts numbers alongside words.

Understanding Your Score

Your Score = Net WPM × a difficulty multiplier. Choosing harder settings earns a higher multiplier, so a 60 WPM run on Hard outranks an 80 WPM run on Easy. This is the number used for leaderboard rankings and personal bests.

Net WPM is your corrected speed — only correctly typed characters count. Gross (Raw) WPM counts everything you typed regardless of errors. The gap between them shows what errors are costing you.

Accuracy is the percentage of keystrokes that were correct. Aim for 95%+ in practice; 98%+ in tests.

Consistency measures how even your speed was throughout the test — 100% means identical WPM every second.

Accounts and Progress Tracking

Create a free account to save your results, view your WPM over time on a progress chart, and appear on the leaderboard. Your results are stored automatically after each completed test once you're logged in.

Themes

Click the sun/moon icon in the top-right to open the theme picker. There are 16 themes including Dark, Light, Serika Dark, Catppuccin, Dracula, Monokai, Gruvbox, Tokyo Night, and more. Your theme preference is saved locally and persists across all pages.

Difficulty Modes

Easy — common short words from the top-500 English word list. Good for beginners and warmup sessions.

Medium — standard word bank with varied word length. The default mode.

Hard — longer, less common words that require more precise motor control. Hard mode also enables punctuation and numbers automatically.

Results and What They Mean

  • WPM (Net) — your score after the error penalty is applied. This is your headline number and the standard used for leaderboards and certifications.
  • Raw WPM — gross speed before error deduction. The gap between raw and net reveals how much errors are costing you.
  • Accuracy — percentage of keystrokes that were correct. Target 95%+ in practice, 98%+ in tests.
  • Characters — breakdown of correct / incorrect / extra / missed characters across the test.

Sharing Results

After completing a test while logged in, a shareable result link is generated automatically. You can copy the link or share directly to WhatsApp, Twitter/X, or Reddit using the share buttons in the results panel. The link shows your WPM, accuracy, and test mode to whoever you send it to.

Common Issues

The test won't start

Click anywhere inside the word area to focus it, then begin typing. The test starts automatically on your first keystroke. If the focus overlay is still showing, click or tap the typing area directly.

My score didn't save

Scores are only saved for logged-in users on completed tests. A test is considered complete when the timer runs out (time mode) or all words are typed (words mode). Restarting mid-test does not save a score. Check that you're logged in before starting a test you want to keep.

The typing area is scrolling unexpectedly

The word display scrolls vertically to keep the current word visible. This is intentional — it allows for very long word lists without a fixed-height container. If the page itself is scrolling when you type space, click inside the word area to ensure it has focus rather than the page.

I can't change the theme on some pages

Click the sun/moon icon in the top navigation bar on any page to open the theme picker. Your selected theme applies site-wide and is remembered for your next visit.
